News and Updates

1. Free School Recycling Program from Apple
The Apple in Education Program is underway for 2012. This Apple program offers FREE
recycling to educational institutions throughout the U.S. All schools must be registered by
August 31st. A minimum of 25 items are required for the free pickup and recycling program. All
K-12 schools and universities and colleges are eligible for free electronics recycling under this
program. http://www.apple.com/education/recycling/

2. Copper Stolen from Montana Rail Link Site in Helena
This week thieves took $875 worth of product-grade copper from a site of Montana Rail Link in
Helena. The thieves are likely to sell the perfectly good copper as scrap to an unsuspecting
recycling business. Many large scrap dealers, such as Pacific Steel & Recycling, have processes
in place to identify and report stolen scrap as it arrives in their lot. The past several years have
seen scrap dealers working closer with law enforcement as the amount of stolen copper in the
U.S. has soared due to rising demand and prices for scrap copper. The thieves also did $500
worth of damage to the property. http://helenair.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/feet-of-copper-wire-stolen-from-montana-rail-link-lot/article_135086de-b12f-11e1-af48-0019bb2963f4.html

3. How2Recycle Labels: Consistent Labeling Initiative Gains Support

An additional five major brands have committed to voluntarily use a label system for recycling
which is consistent with other members of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition. The
How2Recycle label has been developed to provide consistent messages to the public and
hopefully, reduce confusion regarding what is, or is not, recyclable.
